We invite interested students (and parents) to look into this lovely opportunity in Southern Spain. Spanish Core Immersion invites Pre IB and Mid IB students to live and learn in Vejer de la Frontera in beautiful Andalucía. This compact 7-21 day holistic, interdisciplinary course includes 15-45 hours of classroom Spanish, yet 24/7 immersion in the rich language, culture and history of Southern Spain. The focus is on local and global issues, and the course has both pre-IB and mid-IB options. All students complete the course with a creative project that highlights their own experiential learning for their individual CAS programme.*
Each morning Monday through Friday begins with a 3-hour intensive classroom session at the La Janda Spanish School. Our dynamic teaching staff provide personalized learning in small classes, with options for absolute beginners and those who have been studying Spanish previously. The focus is on listening, oral expression and reading comprehension. Students not studying IB Spanish can apply this learning experience to their individual CAS programme.*
Afternoons immerse students in authentic learning in the local culture of Andalucía where they can practice their Spanish language skills in real life situations. Activities include donkey riding, trekking, flamenco, cooking, photography, yoga, surfing and swimming, as well as interesting “service learning” experiences.
Evenings will be spent focusing on the IB Core.
- Pre-IB students will be introduced to the IB Core – Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service).
- Mid-IB students will have focus on the TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS, as the day’s experiences will include activities that allow them to address the essential learning outcomes required of the program.
Time for reflection is built in for all, with a focus on 21st century skills such as collaboration, reflection and self-management.
The culminating project for the week is a PSA made by students that highlights their learning engagements, and focuses on local and global issues. Topics may include an examination of the impacts of tourism, respecting and maintaining culture, or restoration of archeological, ecological and historical sites.
With a focus on collaboration, communication, and self-management, Spanish Core Immersion students will make lasting friendships with students from international schools around the world while also having the potential to make a difference through their culminating project.
*Prior approval from the school’s CAS Coordinator is recommended.
